what is thermistor? | how thermistor work’s? | what is NTC & PTC?

HELLO FRIENDS.

Thermistor

As name suggest it is a (thermal based resistor).

A thermistor is a type of resistor whose resistance varies significantly with temperature.

There are basic two types of thermistor.

NTC   &   PTC.

NTC (negative temperature co-efficient)

When heated, its resistance decreases, when cooled its resistance increases.

PTC (positive temperature co-efficient)

When heated, its resistance increases, when cooled its resistance decreases.

Uses of Thermistors

Thermistors have a wide range of applications. They are widely used in many different liquid and ambient air environments as a means of measuring temperature as a thermistor thermometer. Some of the thermistors ‘most common uses include:

·         Electronic thermometers (thermostats)

·         Automotive applications (to monitor oil and coolant temperatures in cars and trucks)

·         Household appliances (such as microwaves, refrigerators and ovens)

·         Battery safety (i.e. surge protection)

·         Rechargeable batteries (to ensure proper battery temperature is maintained)

·         To measure the thermal conductivity of electrical materials

·         Temperature control (i.e. maintenance of rechargeable batteries)

But the main thing is (how to check a thermistor).

Here are the steps:-

·       Take a multimeter & set it on ohm(Ω) mode.

·       As we check a resistor, connect two probes to two legs of thermistor (no positive or negative required).

·       Now heat the thermistor using some heat source ex: solder iron, etc.

·       If resistance increases with heat, it is PTC type thermistor.

·       & if resistance decreases with heat, it is NTC type thermistor.
