What is relay ? | how
relay works ?
HELLO
FRIENDS.
Relay
A relay is an electrically
operated switch. Relays use an electro magnet to operate a switching mechanism
mechanically .
Relays are used where it is
necessary to control a circuit by a low-power signal (with complete electrical
isolation between control and controlled circuits)
You can see the schematic
diagram of a relay and an image of a real relay below.
NC—Normally Closed,
NO—Normally Open.
A and B
should be connected to battery
or a DC source.
NO NC
& COMMON, is a switch (SPDT).
A &
B are the two terminal of coil (which is
used as electro-magnet).
When supply
is given to A & B coil works as magnet and pull the shaft to switch (NC to
OPEN, & NO to CLOSE) as switch do.
Relay comes
in variety of ratings and sizes, Generally a 5volt
relay, 240VAC/ 7Amp is enough for a hobbyist. As it can drive almost
all home appliances.
Relays are also
used for sensing purposes.
For ex:-
buchholz relay, for fault detection in power transformers.
