WHAT IS POTENTIOMETER ?

HELLO FRIENDS.

Potentiometer or Variable Resistance or Preset

It is a three legged electronic component which can be made to offer varying resistance in circuit.

It is a resistance with a knob to increase or decrease the resistance. When the spindle is rotated to a direction it will increase the resistance and when it rotated to another direction the resistance decreases. Use only two pins - middle pin and one pin from either side for circuit making.

These are miniature versions of the standard variable resistor. They are designed to be mounted directly onto the circuit board and adjusted only when the circuit is built.

There are three terminal in which middle terminal is called wiper, and it is also used signaling purpose.

IMPORTANT:-

When it is connected in a circuit, for ex:- if first and middle are connected as shown in fig, then, if we rotate it in clockwise direction, the resistance increases.

and it is connected (middle & third), the resistance increases when spindle is rotated in anti-clockwise. And vice versa.
